There is one week in spring when this staircase is covered with pink from head to toe by the surrounding trees. That week happened to be spring break, when I was not in Santa Cruz, but this was the week prior. My Peregrine Internship: Fellow volunteer Sandra Menzel took this photograph at the Long Marine Lab, where we kept a careful eye on three peregrine falcons (read more in Spring 2005). Peregrine Internship: This is the area we spent most of our time observing the Peregrines. Straight out, you can see the ocean, where we saw whales at one time or another. Peregrine Internship: Here the falcons sit on the Lab's water towers, one of their favorite spots. Peregrine Internship: This is hackbox, the place where we feed the birds and first released them. (It takes the place of a nest). Peregrine Internship: Here Gordon, the full-time hacksite attendant takes a nap when he thinks no one is looking. You can tell those Peregrines liked to keep us on our toes. Before I found out about my internship at NASA Headquarters this summer, I was originally signed up to study quasars under Jason Prochaska at UCSC.
